Pat-Med Students Take Top 3 Prizes at BNL Bridge Building Contest; Legislator Calarco Congratulates Builders

      At the June 4 meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Rob Calarco honored the first, second and third place winners in the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s annual Bridge Building Contest – all of whom hail from Patchogue-Medford High School. This is the second consecutive year Pat-Med students have swept the top three spots. Brianna Shortell took first place with a bridge that weighed 20.7 grams and held 89.18 pounds, 1954.17 times its own weight. Michael Grazio placed second with a bridge that weighed 21.01 grams and held 89.83 pounds, 1939.37 times its weight, and third place went to Justin Schulz, whose bridge weighed 14.59 grams and held 60.78 pounds, 1889.61 times its weight. Legislator Calarco Secures $15K for Patchogue Cultural Institutions

      Patchogue, LI—Monday, May 13, 2013: At their May 7th General Meeting, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously adopted two bills, co-sponsored by Legislator Rob Calarco, which secured $10,000 for the Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center in Patchogue (Plaza MAC) and $5,000 for the Patchogue Village Center for the Performing Arts. Both bills (IR 1327 & IR 1328) allocated funding from the Hotel/Motel Room Tax Fund, a fund which exists to promote the tourism industry in Suffolk County.

Calarco Establishes South Shore Coastal Protection Task Force

      Hauppauge, LI—Tuesday, May 7: Legislator Rob Calarco’s bill (IR 1355) to establish the South Shore Coastal Protection Task Force passed today at the General Meeting of the Legislature. The bill, which set ups an 11-member task force to develop recommendations for the protection of the environment and infrastructure on the South Shore and barrier islands of Suffolk County, requires the group to provide the Legislature with a written report within six months.

Legislator Calarco Delivers Remarks at 2013 Long Island Complete Streets Summit

Farmingdale, LI— Thursday, April 11: Four months ago, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously adopted Suffolk County’s first ever Complete Streets bill, authored by Legislator Rob Calarco. Legislator Rob Calarco was invited to make introductory remarks at the Long Island Complete Streets Summit on April 11th. The Summit was hosted by Vision Long Island and the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

Legislator Rob Calarco’s bill (IR 2025), directed the Department of Public Works to consider all modes of travel when designing a road project. Legislator Calarco Celebrates Opening of “Chaos and Containment” at Patchogue-Medford Library

Patchogue, LI— Wednesday, April 2: Legislator Rob Calarco joined with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), Village of Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, and the Patchogue-Medford Library today to kick-off the opening of the “Chaos and Containment” exhibition, which is comprised entirely of art created by individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The artists are enrolled in the art therapy program at FREE, a not-for-profit agency founded in 1977, headquartered in Old Bethpage, which supports more than 3,500 individuals with different abilities on Long Island. Suffolk County Legislator recently celebrated the grand opening of the Briarcliffe College Dental Hygiene Clinic in Patchogue. The clinic will offer dental hygiene services to Long Island residents while providing learning opportunities for Briarcliffe College students. The Briarcliffe College Dental Hygiene Clinic will officially open to the public in February 2013 for pre-screening and radiology appointments and on March 11, 2013, will open its doors for all comprehensive dental hygiene services.
