Statewide Early Voting Begins Saturday; Here's How to Vote

ALBANY — Early voting, which will include weekend and evening hours, begins Saturday and extends through Oct. 31 at select polling sites in counties statewide.
Voters will be able to cast ballots on local races and on five statewide ballot proposals.
Here's how to participate in the increasingly popular method of casting ballots for the Nov. 2 election:

Suffolk police: Violent crime down in 1st quarter of 2017

Crime in Suffolk County, already at historic lows in 2016, is down 7.2 percent so far this year, Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said Wednesday.

Violent crime — categorized as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — dropped by nearly 25 percent through March 11 compared to the same period last year, Sini said during a news conference at Suffolk police headquarters in Yaphank.

“We’re targeting the right people, we’re targeting the right spots and we are collaborating with the community to solve problems,” he said. “That is why you see reductions in crime across the board.”

More Sewer Relief for Patchogue

Patchogue Village is finally getting the $18 million Gov. Andrew Cuomo promised in 2014 for additional sewer hookups.

That means homes south of streets like Mulford and Laurel as well as those not yet hooked up on River Avenue will be eligible, over 600 homes. Mayor Paul Pontieri said it would be a three-to-four-year project.

Pontieri introduced the intermunicipal agreement, or IMA, with the county, part of the Suffolk County Coastal Resiliency Project, Monday night that was approved, the first step in starting the process.

Buy-back nets 10 handguns in Bellport

Suffolk County officials collected 10 handguns and five assault weapons on Saturday at a gun buy-back program in Bellport.
Thirty high-capacity magazines were also turned in at the two-hour event at the Lighthouse Mission on Montauk Highway, according to the Suffolk County Police department.

The program was presented by County Executive Steven Bellone, the police department, county Leg. Rob Calarco and Brookhaven councilwoman Connie Kepert.

People who turned in unregistered guns received a $200 cash card for an assault weapon; a $100 cash card for a pistol/revolving hand gun; and a $20 cash card for high capacity clips (over 10).| read more ››

In some ways, you can call Legis. Rob Calarco the whip of the Suffolk Legislature, a term used for Congress that basically mimics his new post as Democratic majority leader.

“It’s to see to the needs of the Democratic caucus, that we’re working as a team united,” Calarco said in his Patchogue office. “It’s not an easy thing to do.      County Executive Steve Bellone joined with Legislator Rob Calarco and Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri today to announce the initiation of a unique shared services agreement between the County and the Village. The covenant, dubbed “Salt for Services,” calls for the Village to take on all general maintenance of the following County assets: County Road 19, (Waverly Avenue) from Roe Boulevard to Main Street, the 6th District Court property (located at 150 West Main Street) and the 5th Police Precinct property (located at 125 Waverly Avenue). In exchange, the County will provide the Village with free road salt, loan street sweepers on an as-needed basis and provide technical assistance.

NEW EAST PATCHOGUE CIVIC GROUP TAKES OFF

     Legislator Rob Calarco attended the second meeting of the newly organized Miramar Beach Civic and Neighborhood Association. The meeting, held in the basement of St. Joseph the Worker Church, drew more than 50 residents of the East Patchogue enclave, which consists of North to South roadways South Dunton Avenue, Clinton Avenue, Miramar Avenue, Bayview Avenue and the East to West streets which run between them.
     The primary focus of the meeting was improving the Town of Brookhaven-maintained park at the end of Bayview Avenue: Miramar Beach Bay Breeze Park. Calarco Lands $10,000 for Greater Patchogue Historical Society

   &nbsp  Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco recently presented the Greater Patchogue Historical Society with a check for $10,000, which represents County funding Calarco secured for the organization. According to Steve Lucas, Treasurer for the Historical Society, the group intends to spend the funding on the design, printing and distribution of a large reference map of the Patchogue area showing past and present historic structures with captions about each site, the construction and placement of two or more historic markers at appropriate locations, the purchase a laptop computer and projector to allow for portable historic presentations and for the inventory of the Society’s artifacts.| read more ››

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco recently recognized the Sixth Grade Winner of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair, Emily Phua of Bayport-Blue Point’s James Wilson Young Middle School. Emily won for her project, “NO TASK LEFT BEHIND: THE EFFECTS OF TASK SWITCHING ON 6th GRADE MATH SCORES.” Based upon her observation that students frequently switch tasks while completing school work, Emily designed an experiment to determine if task switching causes students to be less efficient and accurate. Emily’s hypothesis was that task switching would cause students to be less efficient and accurate when solving math problems.| read more ››
