Legislator Rob Calarco attended the second meeting of the newly organized Miramar Beach Civic and Neighborhood Association. The meeting, held in the basement of St. Joseph the Worker Church, drew more than 50 residents of the East Patchogue enclave, which consists of North to South roadways South Dunton Avenue, Clinton Avenue, Miramar Avenue, Bayview Avenue and the East to West streets which run between them.
     The primary focus of the meeting was improving the Town of Brookhaven-maintained park at the end of Bayview Avenue: Miramar Beach Bay Breeze Park. Local resident Jacquelyn Schwicke, who organized the group, led the discussion which centered on drug activity and loitering which is occurring in the late evening hours at the park. Legislator Calarco invited the Suffolk County Police Department’s Community Oriented Police Enforcement (COPE) unit to attend the meeting and three officers were on-hand to answer questions.
     Legislator Calarco was encouraged by the evening’s activities, “It is always positive to see people actively involved in their community. Tonight’s meeting was a great example of civic engagement matters. By attending this meeting and speaking with the COPE officers, these residents have started a dialogue about the issues that matter to them. The conversation doesn’t end here, but now we can work together to improve the quality of life for the entire community.” The next meeting of the Miramar Beach Civic and Neighborhood Association is set for Tuesday, September 24 from 7-9 pm at the Hagerman Fire Department.
